Exclusive & Extraordinary Inspirational Icon Awards 2022

Updated: Mar 31, 2022

This Women's Day, the APHD organized a virtual event to celebrate amazing women worldwide.

As a disability activist, mentor, trainer, advocate and family representative, Mrs Ferozia Hosaneea, founding member of the Youth with Disabilities Empowerment Platform was recognized and awarded in the category "Exclusive and Extraordinary Inspirational Icon 2022".

Ferozia has been advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities for over 30 years and has an extensive knowledge on the matter. She has chaired various Boards at a regional level; was elected as executive member of several international and regional forums; has held leadership roles in institutions and organizations in Mauritius; worked as a Parent Mediator at the Ministry of Education in Mauritius; has followed numerous courses and trainings in respect of disability; and has even presented the report for Mauritius before the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In 2018, she founded the Youth with Disabilities Empowerment Platform, to provide equal chances to persons with disabilities in Mauritius. She believes that the fact that young adults with disabilities are removed from educational institutions at the age of 20 is a major form of discrimination. For her, this is the time when one reaches adulthood and should be provided with the tools to live independently. Yet, persons with disabilities are left behind and need to be looked after by their parents. Ferozia is against this practice.

People with disabilities should be allowed to reach their full potential. Ferozia has therefore decided to follow the human rights approach to disability, and helps the members of the Youth with Disabilities Empowerment Platform to be full and equal members of society.

Ferozia has dedicated her whole life to reaching these goals and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
