Reflecting on Our ECOSOC Youth Forum 2025 Side Event: Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Advancing SDG 8

On 15 April 2025, the Youth with Disabilities Empowerment Platform (YWDEP), in collaboration with KOGC and TIIKM, successfully hosted a powerful virtual side event at the ECOSOC Youth Forum under the theme:“Empowering Persons with Disabilities: Advancing SDG 8 for Inclusive Economic Growth and Decent Work for All.”

Held across multiple time zones, the event brought together a diverse international audience to spotlight the rights of persons with disabilities in the world of work.

Our esteemed speakers shared valuable insights:

🔹 Dr. Loren O’Connor discussed how higher education can play a transformative role in equipping students with disabilities for the workforce. He highlighted the importance of accessible learning environments and support systems that ensure a smooth transition from education to employment.

🔹 Dr. Thierry Kolpin explored the intersection of mental health and disability in the workplace. He addressed the challenges PwDs face in mental health assessments and emphasized the need for psychologically safe spaces that promote well-being and productivity.

🔹 Mr. Isanka Gamage reflected on the critical role of enterprises and international platforms in promoting inclusive economic participation. Drawing from the World Conference on Disability and Rehabilitation, he emphasized how global collaboration can strengthen inclusive employment frameworks.

🔹 Mrs. Zahra Hosaneea focused on the importance of advocacy, legal frameworks, and inclusive hiring policies in both the public and private sectors. She called for stronger implementation of existing laws and the development of more inclusive workplace practices.

The event served as a platform to exchange ideas, share experiences, and reinforce the global commitment to ensuring decent work and economic inclusion for persons with disabilities. It reminded us that inclusive growth cannot happen without dismantling barriers and creating opportunities for all.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all speakers, participants, and partners who made this side event a meaningful and impactful dialogue. Together, we continue to push for a world where no one is left behind.

Stay tuned for more updates and follow-up initiatives from YWDEP.
